This rare beauty turns out to be one of the very earliest from the official release year - Jan 1975.
When I say "official" release, they made 219 red or black versions pre-released before the NAMM 75 show as this was the full release year.
There are quite a few clues to help us nail it. The serial is very early being a stamped 6 digit version with "Made in USA" under it. The tuners are not stamped "Gibson" these were introduced in 1976/7. We lucked out on the neck pocket, as you can see, there are 3 date stamps, one has the last digit obscured by the large letter "R", the other has the last digit smudged beyond a recognisable number.
The pots are date 1974 and wiring is original, the bridge has had a great upgrade to a high mass unit.
As you can see the cavity and plate has had additional shielding fitted, we think maybe in 1995 as a date is marked on it.
Overall it is in a very honest condition, great frets with no ruts, obvious play wear from its near 50 year history. We have just restrung it and set it up and it is a real darlin' of a bass!
